Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
