A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
