The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
