2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct vision.
The president expressed that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy community desires.
This announcement echoes a comparable action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re excited for that partnership to persist.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game playtest was enlightening. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To further the incredible advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. Following some time of talks, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and experience in the PVP shooter field is vast, having spent the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most popular titles in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in welcoming him next week. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to come.
David
The appointee currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year alongside a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that evolve every round. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your group can secure victory? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an official launch window or platforms, but fans can look forward to additional details as development continues.
